Against “Gymtimidation”: AbsoluteFIT and Atmosphere

Don’t fear the studio — you’re among friends, and if you don’t even know what a stability ball is, we’ll help you out!

These days, the AbsoluteFIT studio feels like an extension of my own house — I know where everything is, and when a trainer starts telling us what equipment we’ll be using, I can figure out what weights/strengths/sizes I need and just go get them. Plus, although there are new members all the time, I know all the veterans and part-timers, so I’m among my people.

But not everyone has that kind of years-long experience with the place, and I know firsthand that it can be seriously intimidating to walk into a room where it feels like everyone but you knows each other and knows what they’re doing.

And I want to tell anyone who’s considering AbsoluteFIT but is nervous about it: This is the most welcoming atmosphere in all of fitness.

Seriously! Your trainers and workout companions will help you find the right dumbbells for your overhead press, show you where the jumpropes are, help you get your feet properly strapped into the rowing machine, demonstrate a move as many times as you need to get it, and cheer you on while you do your best. And nobody’s competitive with each other: It’s a roomful of friends, even if it’s your very first session.

So get on in here, and join the AbsoluteFIT community — we’re all part of your fitness journey, and we’ll be glad to help you on your way!

She plays bass, reads a lot, watches too much TV, and can be found in the AbsoluteFIT studio three to five times a week. Her life goals include having a body like Linda Hamilton’s in Terminator 2, and/or having Bill Murray randomly crash a party she is attending. If you need something from her, try bribing her with good coffee or cold beer; odds are, she wants one or the other of those right now.

  1. Can confirm. Now, when I visited AVAC, I was with my big sister, and she makes everything all right…but the atmosphere is very supportive and encouraging. Our teacher was Marie!
