September 23 is Santa Clara Adult Falls Prevention Awareness Day which promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for adults in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere.
Many adults experience falls injuries that prevent them from living safely. AVAC® would like to promote lifestyle adjustments, such as appropriate exercise to improve strength and balance, regular eye exams, improved lighting and removal of hazards in the homes.
Almaden Valley Athletic Club® helps in the prevention of falls with regular classes that help to improve some of the above areas of concern. Our “Just Enough” class, Spring Chickens, mobility, Gentle Mat, Reformer and Barre classes help our members and guests sense the control of their environment. The Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County proclaimed September 23 as a Falls Prevention Awareness Day, “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls,” and encourages all residents to work with family members and health care providers to identify and address factors to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
AVAC® offers classes in the group exercise room, Tuesday Wellness Series seminars, and social events to teach members about the importance of mobility so that they won’t have to think about falling. Our Line Dance class last Friday night was a perfect example — by learning new dance steps, our brains are stimulated in a manner that aids in better balance. Do something different. Do something out of your comfort zone. You will increase balance and protect yourself from falling.
