Two years ago, after years of casual/haphazard running for exercise, I ran a local 5K race — the first actual race I’d run since my ill-starred track team participation in 8th grade — as part of the preparation for the half-marathon I’d decided out of nowhere to train for.

I was so nervous, going in. I carried with me all the baggage of that awful track team experience from the late 80s, all my negative feelings toward athletic competition, and a bizarre sense that, despite the middle-of-the-pack times I was logging on my Garmin, I was going to come in dead last, sometime around dusk …

Just for kicks, I’m running a 5K race in March; AbsoluteFIT has made me strong enough to challenge my own personal best time.

But I did it — and it was SO. MUCH. FUN!!! I couldn’t believe it, honestly. I loved it! And I placed a thrilling 9th in my age group (30-39), with a respectable 30:09 time.

Last year, though I decided against doing another half-marathon (OMG, THE TIME-SUCK!), I did the same 5K, shaving nearly two whole minutes off my time — 28:11, wooo! That improved time was only good for 11th place in my age category (40-49), though, because y’all? Outside of the under-20 cadre, the 40-49 Females are the fastest group going. Also, that was the year my daughter decided she wanted to run the kids’ 2K — and now it’s an annual tradition, just the two of us.

This year, I’m stronger and fitter than I’ve ever been, thanks to AbsoluteFIT — and although I’m nervous because I now have a time to beat, I’m positive I can do this. Especially with my daughter there, so we can cheer each other on.
