Lee M’s AbsoluteFIT Journey… The Butt-Kickin’est 45 Minutes of My Day

The Butt-Kickin’est 45 Minutes of My Day

“I love most of what we’re doing, but even when I hate it — aaaaaaaggghhh those squat-jumps!!!! — it’s only for 60 seconds max.”

I’ve been doing AbsoluteFIT 4-5 days a week for nearly two weeks now, and I’m already feeling the difference. The workouts are all different, but consistently they’re the most intense, butt-kickin’est 45 minutes of my day. Here’s my take on what I’ve seen so far:

  • Most sessions are 45 minutes — the perfect length for me — and there are so many offerings, it’s easy to fit a workout into my day. In my experience, an hour starts to get long — there’s too much (wasted) transition time, or if the intensity is kept up, it’s just a little too much — plus, considering showering and getting to and from the gym, it’s more like an hour and a half total; 45 works very well for a busy person’s day. I tend to favor either the early workouts (I’ve done 6:30 a.m., but hardier types can try a 5:15 or 5:30!) or the ones just after school drop off for my first grader (sessions at 9:00 or 10:00).
  • The coaches have their own personalities and styles, but each one knows what she or he is doing, and is on your side. They don’t holler at you like a JV basketball conditioning coach, they don’t do the rah-rah-you-go-girl/empowermentcakes thing, they don’t just tell you what to do and then stand there like a bored teenager who might should’ve gotten a job at a kiosk at the mall instead. These are professionals — they love their jobs, they connect with each individual as if they’re training one-on-one, and they provide just the right mix of instruction, encouragement, and drive. It’s amazing how they make me feel like I belong there, I’m doing great, and I can do even more — all at once. (Shout out to Marie, Oceana, Marcy, and Jon — you guys rock!)
  • Each workout type has a different emphasis, but they’re all total-body, high-energy, and varied enough that you never get bored. I love most of what we’re doing (kettle bell swings were a fave at this morning’s Core/Cardio session), but even when I hate it — aaaaaaaggghhh those squat-jumps!!!! —with these HIIT/Tabata-style formats, it’s only for sixty seconds max. You’re done before you even have time to articulate how much you hate it, heh.

Any questions on what the workouts are like? I’ll post more specifics soon, but meanwhile, ask me anything!

  1. LOL @ “stand there like a bored teenager who might should’ve gotten a job at a kiosk at the mall instead.”

  2. Lee M., I once bought month-long membership to a gym, and I never went. Not even once.
What keeps you motivated to keep going to do your workouts even when you don’t feel like it?

    1. Wildolive77: Two main things, I think. The first one is that I know how much better I feel when I’ve worked out, which is a pretty good carrot to hold out for myself. The second, which I think is key to the AbsoluteFIT experience, is that I’ve made my online session reservation, so they’re expecting me — not that missing a session is going to go on my Permanent Record, or anything, but — you know, I’ve spoken up for a space, and the coaches have made their plans based on X number of people, etc. It’s different from either a solo workout or a bigger GroupX class, where the only person expecting me to be there is me — so that’s an extra bit of motivation to follow through. 🙂
