The Intimidation of working out could keep you from having a great workout!

So, a member came up to me the other day and said, “Oh, you’re the Poolside Boot Camp Instructor…I said, “Yes!” (I’m thinking she was going to ask to join in). She said to me, “I swim during the same time that you teach and I’ve wanted to talk to you”

Me: (Thinking, fantastic, an interested member to take my class, how wonderful!)

Member: Yes, well YOU need to be very careful with the impact out here on the cement…I’m in my 40’s and this is what caused me to get plantar fasciitis.

Me: I’M in my 40’s

Member: Well, ok, well the other young participants in your class…

Me: We are all different ages and I have to say most are in their 30, 40’s and 50’s

Member: Well, yes, but they all have to be FIT before starting your class

Me: …ummm, actually that’s not true at all….we have a lot of first timers and beginners.

Member: ….yes, but they never come back after the first class.

Me: …Actually, again, Untrue…they ALL have come back and they have stuck with the classes.

Member: Well, I really just wanted to tell you to watch what it is that you’re doing in the class.

Me: Thank you.

You see, this member did not realize what a gift she gave me…she exposed a lot of what is perceived by on lookers.  How wonderful for me to have the opportunity to use this to my benefit and clarify.

I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 20 years and one of the things I tribute the success of my fitness classes and Boot Camps is: Teach the class so that all levels of fitness can participate. This is important for a few reasons. Fitness level is all relative, and where one may be strong in lower body and weak in upper body there may be someone standing next to you that is just the opposite; strong upper body and weak lower body.  There are also days that someone may not feel 100%, maybe they didn’t get a good night sleep or they have a flare up with an old injury.  It’s hard to say but in the short of it, why limit my class to “the elite perfect person”; Funny just to write that because, well, ….uuummmmmm…..there’s no such thing….just sayin’! I know it’s a little intimidating to get started and this is why I decided to write my blog on this topic. There are modifications for everything. Everything can be self paced. This is YOUR workout! Plus you will see the same faces over and over again. There is a sense of community among the clients in my class. We are all there supporting each other.  We have a lot of FUN!  This is 45 minutes of YOU time… and it feels AWESOME!
